Our preschool program has been developed for children between 3 and 5.  We believe God has made each child special.  Through our program, we hope to nourish each child’s special talents.  We encourage and recognize each child for their unique ability to self-learn.  This can be accomplished with the support and partnership of the family.

We believe it is the responsibility of our preschool, in partnership with the family through tenderness and with love, to create an environment where the child can discover his/her own uniqueness  and specialness in the eyes of the Lord.

The program consists of a presentation and instruction in the basic areas of religion, language arts, mathematics, practical life, music, motor facilitation, sensorial materials, care of the person, natural science, history, and art.  This will be done at a level understandable to the preschool child through various activities, stories, games, art, projects etc.

To cultivate the child’s own natural desire to learn
To help the child develop respect for others
To help the child develop respect for school materials and keep order in the environment
To develop social interaction between children in a structured program

A child must be 3 by September 1 of the current school year.  The child must be toilet trained.  A current physical will be required.

Registration for the 2022-2023 year is ongoing!  Information can be obtained by calling either Montini Middle School 815-385-1022 or Montini Primary Center 815-385-5380.  Registration for the current year is dependent upon available space within a specific session.  

The Little Angels preschool began as part of the Montini Catholic School system in 1985.  The preschool staff consists of a teacher and one aide.  Class sizes are between 10-15 children.

Religion

The child will be introduced to the following:

1. That God is a loving Father
2. That God is the maker of all things
3. That prayer is talking to or thinking about God
4. The Bible is God’s word
5. That Jesus is God the Father’s special gift, born on Christmas
6. That Jesus died for us and came back to life during the Easter season
7. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are received in Baptism

The child identifies:

1. Parents as those who give life, love and care for him/her
2. The Church as a people who come together to pray as a community
3. Playmates and classmates as friends
4. Grandparents as special members of their family
5. Community and parish helpers as those who give service
6. Christmas as the birth of Jesus
7. Easter as the Resurrection
8. Jesus, Mary and Joseph as the Holy Family
9. Names and some occurrences from the bible
10. Saints as models of the church

The ongoing goal for a child will be observed in the following ways:

• Care for friends through sharing  and thoughtful actions
• Respect for family members, teachers, classmates etc. in their own special way
• Love for God in prayer and respecting nature
• A feeling of safety that God will keep them in his care
• Participate in classroom prayer and activities including the rosary

Language Arts

The communication skills of listening, speaking, spelling, written and oral communication are behaviors that contribute to the act of reading.   The preschool child will be introduced to the pre-reading skills in the following areas; alphabet, fine and gross motor skills, literature, direction, logical thinking and sequencing events.

The child will be introduced to the following:

• Letters and sounds of the alphabet- additionally sign language and Braille
• Cutting along a line, printing letters and numbers, manipulating puzzle pieces, beads and pegs
• Listening to and enjoying stories, identifying and recalling parts of the story from memory
• Following a two step oral direction
• Recognizing objects that go together, objects that are opposites and objects that have specific relationships.

Math

The preschool math program will introduce basic skills to encourage the child to look for interesting patterns and relationships between numbers and objects, color and shapes.  Skill areas are to include: matching, sorting, texture, order and counting

The child will be introduced to the following:

1. Objects in  specific position- top, middle , bottom, left, right between
2. Distinguishing items that are the same and different
3. Classifying objects by color, shape, size and number
4. Reading and printing numbers 0-10
5. Counting orally/ counting 1-1 (calendaring)
6. Identify a circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval
7. Identifying objects of the same length
8. Begin grouping objects 1-5
9. Recognize and create a 2 or 3 object/color pattern

Science

The preschool child finds science to be fascinating.  The child will use their senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch to develop and understand scientific matters.  The student will be encouraged to predict and observe outcomes in nature, plants, humans and animals.  The areas that will be explored are wildlife (birds, animals, insects), dinosaurs, health and nutrition, ecology and weather, recycling, plants, flowers and cooking.

Social Science  

The preschool social science program will revolve around people, places and things.  The subject matter will coincide with events that take place in the child’s everyday experiences.  The pre-K classes learn basic Spanish words (approximately 100 words) during the fourth quarter of the year.
Areas of discussion will include: world of work (occupations), historical events (holidays, birthdays, and vacations), rules and laws (traffic and school), geography (travel and cultures), and animals (habitats and socialization)

Computer Program

During the second semester of the school year, each pre-kindergarten class receives on-to-one computer time with teacher or parent volunteer.  The computer software coordinates the units of study when available.  The areas of math, reading and social studies are reinforced.
